what is printing
screen printing is a fine art technique involving the production of a series of stencilled screens, through which water or oil based ink or paint is pushed, leaving an image on the substrate of choice - paper, wood, metal, textiles...the options are endless.
stencils can be cut from a variety of materials - paper, fabric, plastics - or made using photosensitive solutions.
etching is a fine art technique that involves the production of a plate, from which an image is printed. the marks an artist makes on this plate will hold ink, and be transferred onto paper when put through a press. |
why i printing
i believe that printing is at the heart of where we are today. printing has forever changed the way humans communicate and learn. The ability to reproduce a message, quickly and efficiently, has lead to the creation of an unparalleled knowledge base that deeply affects the way we all see the world.
as an artistic medium, printing can be used to strengthen a message. It allows an artist to access a larger audience, and as a viewer or a buyer, you are able to connect with, and perhaps purchase a piece of work that has been created directly by the artists hand.
don't get me wrong, i think that the digital revolution is an unavoidable progression in printing and communication, and it has its merits.
however, the use of discrete information, i believe, hinders the unlimited human progression of an artist. true artistic control over the environment does not involve a computer. it becomes a dance with the computer rather than a dance with the environment.
ie. get your digits dirty.
i suppose it all comes down to what your idea of art is. it is everywhere, in our expression and depiction. it does not belong simply in a magazine, in a machine or in a process, away from the artist.
ironically, it is the process of printing that aids me greatly in expressing myself and my art. i never said i wouldn't contradict myself. after all, is so often contradictory.
